BOULDER, Colo. – USA Rugby held the first educational webinar meeting Monday, Feb. 10, with more than 250 registered participants.
The free webinar series, to be conducted the second Monday of each month, brings together content on refereeing, coaching, and administration using the GoToMeeting platform.
“This project is an exciting new idea for us,” USA Rugby Coach Development Manager Josh Sutcliffe said. “Sharing the knowledge of the top people in rugby is vital to make our game better and more effective. These free, practical session will make our coaches, referees and administrators better.”
USA Rugby Referee Educator Mike Cobb led Refereeing the Tackle, the first hour-long session. Cobb discussed how referees are taught to position themselves and what to look for in the tackle, as well as defined the tackle and tackle assist, and why confusion on the two terms leads to penalties.
USA Rugby High Performance Player Development Manager Luke Gross led the Coaching the Tackle session, which covered the important safety aspects of the tackle, progressions to teach, and how it develops into team defense.
“This is a great idea,” Gross said. “It’s going to expand and help with the development of our game, the American style of play.”
The second series webinar, set for March 10, will consist of USA Rugby Events Director Jen Gray speaking on creating a safe event and USA Rugby Medical Director Mike Keating discussing concussions and the return to play.
