Eagles miss out on Cup in Guangzhou with loss to France

GUANGZHOU, China – The Women’s Eagles Sevens will compete for the Guangzhou Women’s Sevens Bowl after their 14-12 defeat to France in their final Pool C match.

France went on the attack first after Amelia Villines kicked off at midfield. Line Guerin should have opened the scoring in the second minute after capitalizing on some open space on the wing. When she got to the in-goal, Kelly Griffin caught up to her and took her into touch, saving the try.

France got the ball back close to the Eagles’ try zone and the tables turned on Griffin. She attempted to pick up a bouncing ball in the in-goal, only to have Guerin come from behind her to jump on the ball. France led 7-0 after just three minutes.

Villines set up the Eagles’ most-forward play of the half in the final minute with a pass to Victoria Folayan in space. Folayan could not outrace the defender but was not held down after being tackled. On her way to her feet, however, she lost the ball forward for a scrum.

With time ticking down in the half, France extended the lead through Camille Grassineau Pauline Biscarat kicked her second conversion for a 14-0 halftime lead.

The Eagles again came out flying in the second half and were rewarded with a try in the ninth minute. Folayan showed her speed after a France penalty to get the Eagles on the scoreboard, 14-5.

Ric Suggitt’s team held France for the remainder of the half, but could only muster one more try to cut the lead. Alev Kelter, who was substituted two minutes from time, scored her first career IRB Women’s Sevens World Series try to draw the Eagles within two at 14-12.

The try came after the final whistle, signaling the end of the match. The Eagles, 0-3 with a -39 point differential, will not make the Cup Quarterfinals in Guangzhou and will face China in the Bowl Quarterfinal at 11:50 P.M. ET Saturday.
