Eagles downed by Canada in Guangzhou opener

GUANGZHOU, China – The Women’s Eagles Sevens opened their Guangzhou Women’s Sevens campaign with a 35-7 loss to Canada Saturday.

Ashley Steacy scored Canada’s first try in the second minute with a run through Elana Meyers, who started her first IRB Women’s Sevens World Series match at Guangzhou Uni Town Stadium. She converted the try herself for a 7-0 Canada lead.

It took a few minutes, but the Eagles kept out a few Canadian attacks and mounted one of their own. Kelly Griffin took a quick tap after a Canadian penalty 10 meters from the try line and found space between two Canadian defenders for the Eagles’ reply in the sixth minute. Amelia Villines, captaining the Eagles in China, kicked the conversion to know the score at 7-7.

One minute before the end of the half, Karen Paquin juked Lauren Doyle near the midfield line and accelerated away for the try and a 12-7 Canada lead. Steacy successfully kicked the conversion from in front to bring the halftime score to 14-7.

The Eagles were in the game in the first half, only giving up a lead six minutes into it. In the second half, however, it was all Canada.

Paquin scored her second just a minute into the half with a cut past Jillion Potter and a touch down beneath the uprights. Steacy notched her third conversion for a 21-7 lead.

Less than a minute later – two minutes into the half – Bianca Farella found a hole between two Eagles for her first try of the tournament. Steacy’s fourth conversion made it 28-7 with five minutes left to play.

Canada did not score for another four minutes, but the Eagles did not see much of the ball. Jennifer Kish received the ball near the wing and made a move to the inside before taking her tackler into the try zone. Kelly Russell kicked the conversion and made the final score 35-7.

The Eagles still have Russia and France to play in the pool, with two wins sure to take them to the Cup Quarterfinal. The Bears are up first at 1:06 A.M. ET. that's a pretty poor performance. someone remind me why villines is captain, when potter and some of the others were out there last season? This is why it's hard to follow the womens team. No continuity and strange personnel decisions...
