Coach selection process announced for second Stars v Stripes Camp

BOULDER, Colo. – The coach selection process for the second High School All-American (HSAA) Stars v Stripes Camp has been announced.

This year, 12 coaches will be selected to lead and develop the 50 girls and 50 boys selected from the six Regional All-Star Tournaments as HSAA Stars and Stripes athletes. Four head coaches and eight assistant coaches will lead four teams of future Eagles and Olympians. The USA Rugby Coach Development Department and members of National Team coaching staffs will mentor the coaches in this personal development opportunity.

“We’re looking for someone who wants to step outside of their comfort zone and stretch themselves,” USA Rugby Coach Development Manager Josh Sutcliffe said. “We want them to go beyond what they’ve done in the past, which might be a Regional All-Star team or a high school team, and look at coaching athletes from all over the place and help embed in them the structures we want to see at the national team level.”

Coaches will develop team management skills, coaching best practices, and observation and selection techniques from national team coaches like Boys High School All-Americans Head Coach Salty Thompson and Girls High School All-Americans Head Coach Mollie McCarthy.

“Last year the kids learned an extensive amount in a short period of time due to the fact we had 12 amazing coaches,” USA Rugby High Performance Player Development Manager Luke Gross said. “The players aren’t the only ones to gain from Stars and Stripes, though. The coaches we select bring the knowledge they’ve gained from our staff back to their clubs or schools to help grow the game even further.”

Coaches wishing to apply for selection must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Be a registered and certified coach with USA Rugby (completed player protection package and background check)
  • Hold a USA Rugby Level 200 Coaching Certification
  • All-star/Select side coaching experience
  • Coach a team participating in at least one of the Regional All-Star Tournaments (RASTs)

The Stars and Stripes program is the first national step in the Elite Coaching Pathway. This program will produce coaches that feed into the High School, Junior and Collegiate All-American teams, as well as National Team structures for both sevens and 15s.

It was a great experience! I wish all the hard working coaches could be involved. The boys and girls learned a ton too.
