USA Rugby Coach Week

USA Rugby Coach Week

USA Rugby is thrilled to announce a week dedicated to the people that make the rugby world go round: coaches.  The Coach Development tagline; Better Coaches, Better Players, Better Rugby, is simple but gets to the heart of coaching.

Coaches do much more than run practices and construct game plans.  They mentor players and prepare them for what is thrown at them on and off the pitch while simultaneously improving American rugby.

Coach Week is a way to promote the different courses and offerings available to anyone interested in improving their coaching skills, which in turn will improve their players and American rugby as a whole. Everyday during coach week, one program or offering will be highlighted and an excellent new course will be rolled out.

Coach Week Recap

WHY SHOULD I TAKE A COACHING COURSE?

Rugby is now a part of the Olympic movement and is attracting new talent both on the pitch and on the sidelines. To keep up with the demand for quality rugby coaches, USA Rugby offers valuable coach development and certification programs.  Certification is already required by some Territorial Unions and Local Area Unions, but it’s a good thing to have regardless of requirements as it adds validity to coaches and the sport as a whole.  In addition, coaching courses are a great way to connect with fellow coaches, sharpen and improve your skills, and have an amazing time doing it.

WHY SHOULD I HOST A COURSE? YOU CAN GET PAID!

Why should you host a course? The question is: Why wouldn’t you!? Hosting a coaching course in your area is easy, productive, and can raise money for your club!  That’s a win-win.  Here is how it works: You request to host a course, you find a place to host it, we send out the stuff and personnel needed, and we work with you on promoting the course.  It really is that simple, and any proceeds from the course, you get to keep!  So basically, you get good coach training, get to know coaches in your area, and make money for your club.

COACH DEVELOPMENT: AN OVERVIEW

USA Rugby’s Coach Development Department has designed courses to fit every level of coaching experience.  All courses are aligned with the International Rugby Board (IRB) and all course leaders are trained and licensed by the IRB.

INTRODUCTORY COURSES

Level 1 and Level 2 courses provide a philosophical approach to coaching and leadership.  These courses give participants an opportunity to share ideas and get feedback from your coaching peers, gain practical coaching experience, and receive instruction on cutting edge coaching techniques.

RENEW YOUR CERTIFICATION ACTIVE AND STAY RELEVANT!

Continuing Education is a great way to stay current with the technical side of coaching and rugby.  Course facilitators have enormous amounts of playing and coaching experience at a very high level and engage participants in challenging and important course content.  Continuing Education facilitators include:

Luke Gross – Most capped USA player of all-time, lineout specialist, Collegiate All-Americans Forwards Coach, U20s Forwards Coach

Nigel Melville – Former England captain, British and Irish Lion, coached London Wasps and Gloucester to championships

Bill LeClerc – Current USA Scrum Coach, Former Eagle

SEVENS COACHING COURSE IN VEGAS – YOU CAN’T MISS THIS!

USA Rugby is thrilled to announce that there will be a Sevens Coaching Course in Las Vegas this February 10 and 11 in conjunction with USA Sevens.  USA Head Coach Al Caravelli will appear for a Q&A session for participants.  Participants will watch Caravelli in action at a USA training session, receive super-awesome coaching gifts, and will receive 10 Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) and will add a year to any current certification.  Sevens will appear in the Pan-American Games next year in Mexico and in 2016, the Eagles will likely represent the USA in the 2016 Olympic Games.  The popularity of sevens rugby has already made an impact on global rugby and coaches need to keep up!  Sign up as soon as possible, this one will fill up fast!

ADVANCED COACHING COURSE

This course is not for the weak and timid.  If you graduate from this year-long course, you’ll pretty much have a doctorate in rugby coaching.  National Team coaches Kathy Flores, Dave Hodges, and Candy Orsini have all graduated from this program as has Paul Keeler, Head Coach of perennial Super League powerhouse San Francisco Golden Gate.  You have to apply for admission, provide letters of recommendation, and complete “Developing Rugby Skills” as a prerequisite course.  You won’t go through this alone though; each coach admitted to this program is assigned an IRB licensed and trained mentor who helps you along and provides two on-site visits to a practice you run.  When you graduate, you’ll have the highest level certification out there and be able to make a huge impact in the lives of your players and the American rugby community.
