USA Sevens and USA Rugby announced a new partnership with Las Vegas schools that will help students learn about rugby and the cultures of the 16 international nations competing in the February 12-13 tournament at Sam Boyd Stadium. The “Adopt-a-Country” program will pair a school with each competing team, enabling more than 14,000 students to participate and learn more about the international countries visiting their community.
In advance of the schools and the teams connecting, USA Rugby trained local volunteers in Rookie Rugby and are providing rugby curriculum to teachers in order to sustain the rugby education and build on the momentum that the Adopt-a-Country program generates.
“The Adopt-a-Country program is an incredible educational opportunity for Las Vegas students,” said Dan Lyle, USA Sevens Tournament Director. “The children will learn about international cultures, and the teams will have a chance to meet the students, which promises to be an exciting experience for these players as well.”
The program will include activities that promote multicultural awareness, health and wellness. Each national team will visit its supporting school to promote physical activity, fair play and team work. In turn, the students will give a presentation to their respective teams about what they have learned in studying that nation’s culture.
“This partnership provides our students an interactive way to learn about other countries and cultures while being challenged creatively,” said Judy Myers of the Clark County School District School-Community Partnership Program. “It’s a great program benefitting both the children and the event.”
Students will also be challenged with a critical thinking essay contest and the creative design of fan T-shirts. Each school’s winner of the essay contest will escort his or her team in the “Parade of Nations” on Fremont Street on Thursday, February 10.
