MORAGA, Calif. – The St. Mary’s Gaels took Cal Poly out 58-24 in the national semifinals and are headed to the D1A National Championship on May 18 in Greensboro, N.C.
The Eagles managed only one try against South Africa in the Cup Quarterfinal match of Glasgow 7s on Sunday. South Africa, series winners in Las Vegas and Tokyo, played a clinical match and capitalized on U.S. penalties to dominate the game with a score of 22-5 and knock the Eagles out of the Cup.
Two USA Rugby National Champions were crowned on Saturday, May 4 at Steuber Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif. Penn State and Washington State fought their way to the finals and came away with big wins to be named the Emirates Airline USA Rugby Women’s College DI and DII National Champions, respectively.
The Men’s Eagles Sevens showed more consistency and resiliency than in previous rounds of the IRB Sevens World Series in keeping up with Wales at Glasgow Sevens Saturday, but succumbed to a last-second try to fall to 1-1 with the 26-21 loss.
Not only did the Men’s Eagles Sevens open Glasgow Sevens with an important win, they also decreased their points scored differential with a 48-5 win against promotion-seeking Russia Saturday.
Day one of the 2013 Emirates Airline USA Rugby Women’s College DI & DII National Championships ended with two shutouts by Penn State and Washington, a strong finish by Winona, and an exciting back and forth match between Stanford and the 2012 DII Champions Norwich.
