Men's Eagles Sevens fail to keep up with Canada

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – Harry Jones recorded a hat trick of tries and Canada strolled to a 41-7 defeat of the Men’s Eagles Sevens in the final Pool C match at Emirates Dubai Rugby Sevens.

Conor Trainor opened the scoring in the second minute after getting by Stephen Tomasin just outside the try line. Phil Mack missed the conversion, keeping the score 5-0.

Justin Douglas drew a tackle and sent an offload to Jones in the fifth minute to set up the Canadian with his first try of the match. Mack nailed the conversion this time for the 12-0 lead.

Before the end of the first half, Canada won its own lineout and swung the ball wide for Jones to get his second in two minutes. Canada led 19-0 at the half.

The Eagles had struggled in the first half all day in Dubai, but a second-half comeback was not out of the realm of possibilities.

Canada made a comeback difficult within the first minute of the second frame, however, as an almost exact replica of Jones’ second try allowed Douglas to get on the scoresheet. A lineout swung wide fell to Douglas to take to the try zone.

From the ensuing restart, Andrew Durutalo spun around a Canadian defender and passed to Folau Niua, who beat the other defenders for the Eagles’ opening score. He kicked the conversion to make the score 24-7 in favor of Canada.

After a scrum in the 12th minute, Mack beat Carlin Isles downfield for Canada’s next try. A minute later, Mack kicked the ball past the Eagles and into the try zone before chasing it down and slamming it to the ground for a 36-7 lead.

Isles looked like he was away on the wing after the restart, but he lost the ball and Jones capitalized, scoring his third try of the evening. The whistle had already gone, which signaled the end of the match, a 41-7 win for the northern neighbors.

The Eagles will start Day Two in the Bowl Quarterfinals Saturday, November 30, at 1:26 A.M. ET. Watch on Universal Sports and follow @USARugby on Twitter for live updates.
