CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The Men’s Eagles Sevens welcomed three familiar faces to the Olympic Training Center this week.
Tai Enosa and Pila Taufa, who have been in the Residency program in southern California in the past, and Perry Baker of Tiger Rugby Academy will join the Eagles ahead of the 2014-15 IRB HSBC Sevens World Series on USOC off-site residency contracts.
Enosa was named most valuable player at the 2013 USA Rugby Emirates Airline Division III Club National Championship in leading the Oceanside Chiefs to an overtime Final victory with three tries. Most recently, he received Man of the Match honors as he led San Francisco Golden Gate to a win in the inaugural Pacific Rugby Premiership Final. Enosa last made an appearance with the Eagles in Australia in the 2013-14 IRB HSBC Sevens World Series.
Taufa was selected to join the Eagles in Residency in the winter of 2013, making a late appearance for the U.S. at Marriott London Sevens that year.
Baker, who impressed the Eagle’s staff in 2012 before continuing to pursue an arena football career, once again stood out in the inaugural Elite City Sevens in Houston, Texas, with Ohio Sevens, which earned him a Second-Team All-Tournament selection. The six-foot-one Florida native, as well as Enosa and Taufa, were also included in the first Men’s Eagles High Performance Sevens camp this preseason.
“All three have the ability to change a game,” Men’s National Sevens Director Alex Magleby said. “They need to quickly get their fitness thresholds up and get on song with Coach Friday’s plan, but am confident if they put in the work will be competitive for a spot in the first Olympic Qualifiers starting in just over two months’ time.”
The second Men’s Eagles High Performance Sevens camp will be held at the OTC Aug. 20-26 before the Series kicks off Oct. 11 at Gold Coast Sevens.
