Serevi Sevens Rugby Coaching Seminar

The USA Rugby Serevi Coaching Course, beginning February 9 and ending February 10, will give aspiring rugby coaches the opportunity to learn sevens coaching theory from rugby sevens king, Waisale Serevi.  Accompanying Serevi in the coaching course will be Old Puget Sound Beach Head Coach, Evan Haigh, all-time leader in points scored in the HSBC Sevens World Series Ben Gollings, and USA Sevens great, Matt Hawkins.  The trio will lead classroom sessions that discuss sevens theory, followed by on-field practical application, and ending on the second day with a half-day trip to Sam Boyd Stadium to get an up-close look at coaching in an international setting.  This event is exclusive to USA Rugby members and an amazing learning opportunity given the quality of instruction and the viewing experience partnered with it.

Matt Hawkins, who is also Serevi Director of California, believes the greatest benefit of this course will be the outdoor aspect, “We don’t want people to be stuck in a classroom all day, we want to integrate outdoor teaching with the indoor in order to show how coaches interact with the players.”  This teaching style will allow participants to take in a lot more than they would solely through a classroom environment, thus greatly enhancing their experience.

Hawkins also feels the combination of teaching techniques will be highly beneficial to all levels of coaches, “There is a lot more to take in with sevens because there is nowhere to hide on the field, because of this, all basics and fundamentals of the game must be solid.”

Having been around American rugby for 10 years Hawkins has witnessed many changes in the American rugby landscape and applauds the work done by USA Rugby.  “The growth of youth rugby in America over the past ten years has been exceptional, USA Rugby is growing the game, but because America is so large geographically programs like Serevi are helping plug the development holes.”  A key for rugby’s continual growth in America is development of strong coaches that are capable of properly instructing all levels of the game.

The USA Rugby Serevi Coaching Course will give coaches new and useful techniques used by the professionals that will allow them to effectively teach their players the game and further inspire America to fall in love with rugby.

The upcoming Las Vegas Sevens international rugby tournament that takes place between February 10, 2012 and February 12, 2012, will provide countless forms of entertainment and loads of rugby spanning from playing to coaching the game.  With so much rugby going on over the weekend there will be many opportunities for rugby supporters and activists of all ages to watch and learn from the best rugby players and coaches in the world.
