Fresh from Plate victory, Eagles roster set for Glasgow Sevens

BOULDER, Colo. – USA Rugby Men’s Eagles Sevens Head Coach Alexander Magleby today released his side’s roster for the next round of the IRB Sevens World Series in Scotland, to be played from May 4-5.

Both captain Matt Hawkins and Carlin Isles will make the trip to Glasgow after recovering from injuries in the quarterfinal match against New Zealand at Tokyo Sevens at the end of March.

“Matt was playing well in Hong Kong, and so we look forward to having his go-forward and experience back on the field in Scotland, as well as Carlin’s x-factor,” noted Magleby.

Blaine Scully has also recovered from an injury, which kept him out of both the HSBC Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Sevens and Tokyo Sevens, and will rejoin Series action at Glasgow Sevens. Veteran Mike Palefau is unavailable for selection. Pila Taufa, a new addition to the Residency Program at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., will travel with the team and serve as an alternate.

Zach Test and Nick Edwards both return after impressive performances at Tokyo Sevens. “Zach [Test] has continued to build in training on his last performance and keeps growing as a leader,” said Magleby.

The Eagles moved into a tie for 12th place in the Series standings thanks to a Plate victory against Scotland in Tokyo. Scotland also sits in 12th with 46 points, while rival Canada is in 11th behind England with 54 points.

Russia, Wales and France await Magleby’s Eagles in Pool D. The Eagles defeated Wales 24-22 in the first pool match in Tokyo on their way to the Plate. They last faced France in Hong Kong, a 19-21 loss in the pool stage. Russia, a team that beat the Eagles in last year’s Glasgow Sevens, made it to the Semifinals of the pre-qualifier in Hong Kong and will hope to make an impact in Scotland before playing in the promotion tournament in London.

The Eagles kick off at Glasgow Sevens against Russia on May 4 at 6:36 A.M. ET. Follow live updates on Twitter from the official USA Rugby account (@USARugby) and read game recaps on www.usarugby.org.
