Eagles winless after day one at Marriott London Sevens

LONDON, England – The Men’s Eagles Sevens suffered three losses in pool play at Marriott London Sevens Saturday to set up a Bowl Quarterfinal matchup with Spain Sunday, May 11, at 4:22 A.M. ET.

Madison Hughes, called into the squad as injury relief following injuries to Mike Te’o and Ryan Matyas at Emirates Airline Glasgow Sevens, started the Eagles’ first match against Kenya and set up Danny Barrett’s first-half try to give his team the lead. It would be the only try the Eagles would score, however, as Kenya rattled off four unanswered tries to take the 22-5 win.

Matt Hawkins’ squad was bolstered by Carlin Isles – who made the trip from Glasgow to fill in for the Eagles – in the second match against Canada, and the speedster made an immediate impact with a try in the second minute. Zack Test scored two tries of his own to give the Eagles a 19-0 halftime lead, but Canada came back strong in the second half to hand the Eagles their second loss of the final tournament of the 2013-14 IRB HSBC Sevens World Series, 22-19.

Pono Haitsuka gave the Eagles another early lead in the first minute of their final Pool B match against Samoa, but two first-half tries and three more in the second half for Samoa meant a third loss for the Eagles, who fell, 27-10, to the pool winner.

The Eagles will meet Spain in the Bowl Quarterfinal Sunday. Watch live on Universal Sports and follow live match updates on Twitter with @USARugby.

    Bad favoritism will always come back bite you in ass. Men with fitness and heart of a lion will always win. That's Sevens rugby. Hawkins resign, you suck.

    USA Rugby is so no heading the right direction when it comes to 7s. So much for defending that Gold Metal. With a lot of good 7s coaches in the country a player gets the nod to coach. Fire Hawkins and get someone who actually know whats going on with 7s rugby internationally.

    Suniula boys not playing and they should be especially Roland Shalom, Isles should get more game time, he has speed no other team has, Where is Hawley, he should be in there, aaaaaagggghhhhh. This is killing me. We are all proud americans, I cant stand to keep seeing this happen over and over..

  • Guest - OLYMPICS mmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

    13th unlucky for SOME;

    I like the underdog winning BUT not like the way U.S.A lose, who throw the ball away with BASIC mistakes. U.S.A 7s SUCK; get thrashed by SPAIN without putting them under pressure, WHY not load SPAINS GUNS?

    What is wrong them! do have a concentration problem or something?

    U.S.A continue to play old heads, without bleeding in new caps, how do olympic hopefuls get gametime?

    Why won't they give CI the space to use his God given speed, maybe he'll become playmaker to the get ball where the fowards DEFENSE will back him up, if HE returns!?

    KENYA should of won by 50 points, can U.S.A beat Spain to get to the BOWL? NO

  • Guest - REALLY!!!!!!!!!! U.S.A

    WILL U.S.A beat JAPAN next year!!!!!!!!!! mmmmmmmmmm NO?
