GOLD COAST, Australia – Tries from Brett Thompson and Zack Test were not enough to save the Men’s Eagles Sevens from dropping into the Gold Coast Sevens Shield Semifinals in their 10-19 loss to Scotland.
The Eagles took possession from the kickoff and looked to make an attacking start with good ball movement before committing a penalty in the ruck. Scotland’s Joe Nayacavou took the quick tap and almost made it to the try zone himself, but Folau Niua’s defensive pressure forced an offload to the open Struan Dewar, who finished the play.
The Eagles came right back from the early 0-7 setback with Pat Blair, Matt Hawkins and Test linking up down the right side, but Test was tackled into touch. The Eagles managed to win the lineout and hard work from captain Nick Edwards allowed Test to find space for the try. Niua’s kick missed wide, bringing the score to 5-7.
Thompson was sent to the sin bin after the first seven minutes had been played for an infringement in the ruck and the Eagles help up a Scotland try to escape the half without more damage done.
Down a man, the Eagles kept the deficit to two points, but Alex Glashan broke free in the 10th minute to extend Scotland’s lead. He scored his second a few minutes later to put the team in white and purple up 19-5.
On the last play of the game after the full time whistle, Thompson scored his first try of the tournament to bring the final score to 10-19.
