LAS VEGAS, Nev. – USA Rugby announced today the list of players who will play for the USA Falcons, USA Stars, USA Stripes, and two High School All-American teams at the Las Vegas Invitational (LVI) on February 7-9. The Invitational will take place alongside the USA Sevens Tournament where the Eagles will battle for international ranking in the fifth round of the IRB Sevens World Series.
The LVI, presented by Station Casinos, is one of the premier amateur rugby events across the country featuring players from all age groups, and offers a variety of competition levels. Life University qualified for last year’s Collegiate Rugby Challenge by defeating the University of Utah in the 2012 Las Vegas Invitational CRC Qualifier Division.
The Falcons, who will compete in the Men’s Elite 7s Division, include Eagles Nate Augspurger, Tai Enosa, and Brett Thompson. Past Eagles Sevens player Peter Tiberio is also on the team.
Falcons coach Tony Pacheco believes that the Las Vegas Invitational gives the Eagles Sevens players a chance to push for a spot at the next round of the IRB HSBC Sevens World Series.
“They’re getting an opportunity to showcase themselves against good teams,” he said. “I was in Chula Vista with Alex [Magleby], and competition was high for roster spots. It was a tough decision for Alex to pick a 12-man squad.”
The Stars and Stripes squads are also comprised of multiple Women’s Eagles Sevens players who will play alongside up and coming players picked for development. Among the Stars and Stripes are Lauren Doyle, Kimber Rozier, Vanesha McGee, and Victoria Folayan, fresh from their Cup Final appearance at the IRB Women’s Sevens World Series in Houston last weekend.
The High School All-Americans, coached by Salty Thompson and sponsored by Aircraft Charter Solutions and Robin Reid, will have two teams competing in the High School Elite 7s Division. The division includes four Canadian All Star teams, British Columbia 1 and 2, Ontario, and the Dog River Howlers. Joining the two High School All-American teams are select sides from Utah and Washington.
“They’re going to get a taste of higher-level Sevens,” Coach Salty Thompson said of the High School All-American players. “We’re playing against good Canadian Provincial teams so, for us, this is International Sevens.
“None of these kids have had any specialized Sevens training with us. At our Winter Camp we split them up and played some Sevens, then we selected players from there for the Las Vegas Invitational.”
The High School Elite 7s Division plays Friday, February 8, at Henderson's Heritage Park and the morning of Saturday, February 9, at Nursery Fields, north of Sam Boyd Stadium. The final has been contested between the High School All-Americans and British Columbia for the past two years, with each squad winning one each. The division’s Final will be played at Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
