USA go down against South Africa & Samoa

In the South African clash it was handling errors and turnovers that cost the Americans. The Blitzbokke – as the South Africans are known – ran in four tries to take the wind out of the Eagles sails at 22-0. In the second half the home side played better sevens, but it was too late to catch up. Zach Test scored for the USA, thanks to excellent forwards play, and playmaker Marco Barnard sending his teammate through. South Africa scored a late try to seal the match: USA 5 South Africa 27.

In their second pool match the Eagles produced a much-improved performance, and the score line doesn’t reflect the full story. Samoa scored first, but Roland Suniula and Tai Enosa sparked an excellent attack with Mark Bokhoven driving driving Matt Hawkins through a couple tackles, sending the skipper over for a brilliant score.

In the second half the Americans were without playmaker Shalom Suniula, Mark Bokhoven  – who are both out of the tournament. Nu’u Punimata was later added to that list – which meant coach Al Caravelli called up reserve pool player Taylor Mokate.

Trailing 14-5, Marco Barnard finished off a beautiful team try to put the USA back in it at 14-12. Back and forth play, saw two late tries for the powerful Samoans, seeing them win 28-12.
