Tolkin selects squad for February Domestic Camp

BOULDER, Colo. – Men’s Eagles Head Coach Mike Tolkin announced the 27-man roster for the upcoming Domestic Camp at Life University in preparation for the IRB Rugby World Cup 2015 Qualifier against Uruguay.

The Eagles will assemble at Life University Feb. 20-23 and end the camp with a scrimmage against the school’s club team. Tolkin’s men will then meet again in the second week of March for the Qualifier assembly.

“We’re looking to get them back in the swing of things, get the rust off,” Tolkin said of the domestic players. “It’s been two-and-a-half months since we disassembled in London and a lot of them aren’t playing ball now.”

Among the names being called to Georgia is Louis Stanfill, who missed the Eagles’ November Tour after recovering from surgery following the Qualifier against Canada in August.

“He’s good, back 200 percent,” Tolkin said of his second rower. “He’s been playing with Seattle-OPSB the last few weeks so he will be ready to go.”

Men’s Eagles Sevens players Danny Barrett, Folau Niua, Shalom Suniula and Brett Thompson were also called to camp, though Thompson will not be available due to injury. Niua, who recently signed a contract with RaboDirect 12’s Glasgow Warriors, will also not be available for camp.

The Domestic Camp does not coincide with any leg of the IRB HSBC Sevens World Series, but the two legs of the Qualifier in March overlap Tokyo Sevens and Hong Kong Sevens, respectively.

“I’m working with [Men’s Eagles Sevens Head Coach] Matt Hawkins pretty closely,” Tolkin said of the availability of sevens players. “Basically we’re working together to coordinate things and players we might be using. That’s all been in the process.”

Hear Tolkin discuss what he’s seen from the sevens players:

Brian Doyle, James Paterson and Shawn Pittman were not considered for camp because of injury, and Peter Dahl and Seamus Kelly were selected but not available. Tolkin said Kelly was “under the gun a bit because of school,” but should be back with the squad in March.

The Eagles will face Uruguay in the first leg of the IRB Rugby World Cup 2015 Qualifier March 22 in Montevideo before hosting Los Teros at Fifth Third Bank Stadium at Kennesaw State University March 29.
