BOULDER, Colo. – USA Men’s National Team Head Coach, Mike Tolkin, has announced the squad of 36 players who will report to camp to prepare for the June Test Match series in which the Eagles will take on Canada (June 9), Georgia (June 16), and Italy (June 23).
The camp will take place from May 31 – June 2 at West Point. Tolkin will name the 28 that will take part in the June Test Match at the end of camp.
"One of our goals is to establish the ethos of the team, establish what kind of attitude we're going to have," Tolkin said. "We're also going to plant the roots of our playing style. We're going to put in some new systems on attack and start establishing a new player pool.
Sixteen of the players named took part in the RWC, representing a core leadership group of the squad.
“We’ll look for the returning guys to keep a high standard of play and use their leadership and ability to bring the newer guys along and show them the honor and pride of being an Eagle,” Tolkin said.
Tolkin has also named six players from the collegiate ranks, all of whom played in the Men’s Division 1A competition this year. All of the collegiate players made a postseason appearance in D1A, including three BYU players who will compete in the Men’s D1A National Championship against Arkansas State tomorrow (Saturday May 19).
Fourteen of the athletes will take part in a National Team camp for the first time indicating the coach’s focus on developing young athletes for the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the preceding qualification process.
Twelve players play in the Rugby Super League or Men's Division I, marking Tolkin’s commitment to developing domestic players and also the domestic club game.
In addition, five Eagles, all of whom represented the USA at the 2011 Rugby World Cup, have announced that they have played in their last match in the red, white, and blue.
