ENTERTAINING MATCH FOR USA SELECT

Glendale, Colo. – The USA Select team produced a clinical second half performance against the Glendale Raptors to finish with a 58-10 score line at Infinity Park.

This training match was extremely valuable in the preparation for the Rugby World Cup (RWC), with fifteen new starters taking the field since the Canada clash. Spectators were treated to a feast of tries on a beautiful Colorado evening, welcoming the National team with loud applause.

“The match was a great hit out for us and Glendale brought it for the entire 80 minutes” said Eagles Head Coach, Eddie O’Sullivan.

“It became scrappy at times, but I was very happy with the second half performance.“

The USA Select wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard with wing Zack Test running an excellent inside line off number 10 Roland Suniula. Fullback Tai Enosa added the conversion. Glendale Raptors flyhalf Maximo DeArchaval then kicked a penalty for the home side. Prop Will Johnson was the benefactor from an excellent USA Select maul, with Enosa’s conversion making it 14-3.

Glendale came back strongly, and center Ata Malifa put Casey Rock over for a try in the corner. DeArchaval kicked the sideline conversion. The USA Select line-out was on target, setting up a great attacking platform. Quick hands from the backline saw center Troy Hall dive over in the corner, leaving the half time score at 19-10.

In the second period, scrumhalf Robbie Shaw exposed the Glendale defense off a well-worked line-out move, stepping the last defender to stretch the lead to 26-10. Test got his second try of the match in the 58th minute thanks to Hall creating space for him out wide. Moments later Colin Hawley scored the try of the day with the ball being handled by more than half the team. The USA Select forwards worked cohesively in open play, and through solid set pieces setup several backline tries.

Hall was in the action again, drifting past his defender to score under the poles, putting the Selects up by 46-10. In the last few minutes winger Hawley added two more tries to finish off the match with the Selects winning 58-10.

“We definitely improved as the game wore on. When we played to our pattern, we created scoring opportunities.” said USA Select captain Scott LaValla, who was named Man-of-the-Match this evening.

This weekend the USA Eagles will host rivals Canada at Infinity Park on Saturday, August 13. The match will kickoff at 7.15 P.M and will be broadcast LIVE on Universal Sports, as well as online at UniversalSports.com!
