AIG MJAAs off to France for IRB Junior World Championship

BOULDER, Colo. – The USA Rugby AIG Men’s Junior All-Americans spent some time becoming better teammates in Rutledge, Ga., this past weekend ahead of the IRB Junior World Championship. The MJAAs will arrive in France Saturday and begin play June 5.

The athletes cooked their own meals, stayed in cabins and trained on a field onsite in Rutledge, which is about 90 miles east of Atlanta.

“Last year we had a lot of success with a similar experience in the mountains of Colorado,” Manager Rob Holder said. “When we were planning this year, we were looking for somewhere to get away; somewhere the guys would have to unplug from their phones and internet and really get to know each other.”

The MJAAs then headed to Life University in Marietta for practices and a scrimmage against the Running Eagles on Tuesday.

“We hadn’t really had a lot of time spent together as a group for the whole year,” MJAAs Head Coach Jason Kelly said. “So it was a challenge for us to get a lot of work done in such a short amount of time. It’s a very tight-knit group with 28 guys. There are no divisions among them, they’re all very professional kids.”

The MJAAs won last year’s IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy with a 37-33 victory against Japan in Salt Lake City, Utah. This year, they will face England, France, and South Africa – last year’s champions – in the IRB World Junior Championships in France, the third time the United States has been represented in the competition.

Each Pool A match featuring the MJAAs will be live-streamed on the IRB JWC website, beginning with the opening match against South Africa June 5 at 2:45 P.M. ET.
