Whitewater Washes Out Middlebury

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater powered their way to a DII Championship Sunday in Pittsburgh over Middlebury College at Founders Field in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

There was only four points in the game in the end, with Whitewater scoring the only try in the match in the first half through the War Hawks eight man and Junior All-American, Charles Koehler.  Koehler was named the MVP of the Championship, leading the team by example and making Middlebury's life extremely difficult around the fringes of the breakdown.

Middlbury's only points came through a penalty by the flyhalf Brian Sirkia who slotted a long range penalty to keep his side within a try.

Whitewater dominated the first half, pounding the ball through the forwards and adapting to the greasy conditions of the field.  Middlebury competed at the breakdown, but at the end they were outsized and outpowered by the massive Whitewater pack.  The backs didn't have much impact on the game for either side, with much of the back play coming through back-and-forth kicks, aiming to force the opposition into handling errors and conceding territory.

It was a very tight game that could have gone either way, but Whitewater's size and tenacity at the breakdown gave them the edge at the end, despite Middlebury's absolute determination throughout the entire encounter.
