Top Men’s DI-AA, DII collegiate teams meet in Bowling Green for Championships

BOULDER, Colo. – Bowling Green State University’s Cochrane Stadium will host the 2013 Emirates Airline USA Rugby Men’s Division I-AA and Division II College Championships May 11-12, with Dartmouth, Central Florida, Western Washington, Lindenwood, Salisbury, Towson, Minnesota-Duluth, and Indiana (Pa.) in the final four of their respective divisions. The Semifinals will take place on Saturday, while the Finals will be contested on Sunday.

In the Division I-AA bracket, Dartmouth will play Central Florida in the first Semifinal. Dartmouth defeated Pittsburgh and St. Bonaventure in late April in Pittsburgh to advance to the Semifinals. Central Florida faced a tough Clemson rugby team in Knoxville in the Quarterfinals, but managed to come away with a 24-20 win. Central Florida also beat host Tennessee in the Round of 16.

Dartmouth or Central Florida will be able to scout their prospective Finals opponents in the other Semifinal. Last year’s Division II champion Lindenwood beat Northern Illinois and Bowling Green in Madison, Wis., to earn a date with Western Washington in the Semifinals. Western Washington’s path to the Semifinals included wins against Chico State and Long Beach State in Tucson.

Salisbury and Towson will open the Division II Semifinals on Saturday. Salisbury, last year’s Division II runner-up, reached the Semifinals with victories against Marist – 95-0 – and Rowan in Pittsburgh. Towson left Knoxville with wins against Illinois State in the Round of 16 and UNC-Wilmington in the Quarterfinals. The two teams also met in the 2012 Championships.

The other Division II Semifinal features Minnesota-Duluth and Indiana (Pa.). In Madison, Minnesota-Duluth defeated the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Indiana (Pa.) made it to the Semifinals with a pair of wins in Pittsburgh against Providence and Colgate.

Unlike the Women’s College Championships, there will be no consolation matches for the men’s teams. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Two-day passes will be sold for $15.

The 2013 Emirates Airline USA Rugby Men’s Division I-AA and Division II College Championships will be streamed on USA Rugby TV.
