BOULDER, Colo. – The Penn State, Navy and Norwich women’s rugby teams will join Stanford in California this weekend for the 2013 Emirates Airline USA Rugby Women’s Collegiate DI National Championship Semifinals at Stanford University’s Steuber Rugby Stadium May 3. Buffalo, Washington State, Winona State and Quinnipiac will compete in the DII National Championship Semifinals that same day.
Stanford cruised to the Semifinals with a pair of big wins against New Mexico and Texas A&M in the first two rounds, scoring a combined 115 points and giving up just 32. Stanford will face Norwich, who managed a 29-23 win against Army in the last round and a 54-10 win against Indiana in the first round. Norwich won the 2012 DII title.
Stanford advanced to last year’s women’s DI Final, but lost to Penn State 32-12. The two could potentially meet again in this year’s Final, as Penn State advanced to the Semifinals with a 58-5 win against West Chester and a 22-10 win against Cougar Women (UT). The Nittany Lions will take on Navy in their Semifinal match. Navy defeated Brown and Virginia in the opening rounds of the Women’s Collegiate DI National Championship.
Buffalo, Washington State, Winona State and Quinnipiac have all made it to this weekend’s 2013 Emirates Airline USA Rugby Women’s Collegiate DII National Championship Semifinals.
Buffalo shut out Lock Haven 44-0 to reserve a place in the Semifinals against Washington State, who defeated both Utah Valley and CSU Northridge 61-10 in the early stages of the National Championship.
Winona State gave up just 10 points in its matches against Indiana (32-7) and Denison (54-3) and will face Quinnipiac in Stanford. Quinnipiac’s early matches were much closer – a 25-20 win against Lee and a 22-10 victory against Appalachian State. Winona State lost to Norwich 82-12 in the 2012 Women’s Collegiate DII Final and will not have to worry about a rematch, as Norwich is competing at the DI level.
Winners of the respective DI and DII Semifinals will meet on Saturday in the Finals, while the losers will face each other in consolation matches.
Tickets for the Women’s Collegiate National Championships can be purchased daily for adults ($10) and children/seniors ($5). The matches will be streamed online at usarugby.org.
