Some blowouts and some battles highlight day 1 of Men’s College Playoffs
BOULDER, Colo. – Big time score lines were plentiful on day one of the Emirates Airline USA Rugby Men’s College Playoffs, while some teams were made to struggle to advance to day two.
Starting off the day in the North East bracket of D1-AA was the hometown Big Green of Dartmouth, who put an experienced Shippensburg side to the sword 75-5. Former USA U-20 Madison Hughes had a big day with ball in hand and with his foot putting 21 points on the board single handedly. Kevin Clark also dotted down 4 times for Dartmouth, who are down from D1-A last year and will have to be considered a favorite to win D1-AA this year.
Dartmouth will go on to face Stony Brook who fought tooth and nail today with Northeastern. Winger Colin Applegate scored a try in the 82nd minute to pull Northeastern within two points, but the conversion attempt from James Sullivan sailed wide and Stony Brook pulled out the 24-22 win.
Elsewhere in 1-AA Oregon State put up a fight with UC Santa Barbra, but UCSB’s John Gallo added 22 points that would be the winning factor as the Gauchos moved on to the Quarters with a 37-27 win.
