AIG MCAAs open Summer Tour with win against Cambridge University

HANOVER, N.H. – Tries from Paris Hollis, Mike Lawrenson, and Kingsley McGowan propelled the USA Rugby AIG Men’s Collegiate All-Americans to a 27-15 win against visiting Cambridge University Saturday.

The MCAAs began the three-match tour in New England at Dartmouth College, where Kutztown University’s Niku Kruger kicked a penalty goal to open the scoring in the match’s second minute. McGowan, fresh from a D1A Championship with Saint Mary’s College, scored the first try a few minutes later to extend the MCAAs’ lead to 10-0.

Cambridge’s Nigel Conroy put his side on the board with a penalty kick in the 10th minute, but Hollis gave the MCAAs breathing space at halftime with a 24th-minute try.

Vili Tolata’u was shown a yellow card at the end of the half and Cambridge capitalized in the second half with two tries during the 10-minute man-advantage for a 17-15 lead.

Lawrenson scored in the 61st minute to regain the lead, and a 67th-minute try from Hollis put Cambridge out of reach for the 17-15 win.

In the second match against the Collegiate Barbarians from Ontario, the MCAAs led, 12-5, before going into the half down, 20-19. They could not overcome the Canadian side and ultimately fell, 35-32.

The MCAAs will continue their summer tour at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, Mass., Wednesday, June 25, against Cambridge University. They will finish the tour in Canton with a match against Ontario Blues Saturday, June 28.
