AIG MCAAs defeat Cambridge University in second match of Summer Tour

MALDEN, Mass. – The USA Rugby AIG Men’s Collegiate All-Americans completed a two-match sweep of Cambridge University Wednesday with a 22-12 victory at Pine Banks Park.

The MCAAs defeated Cambridge with four tries Saturday and followed it with a three-try performance Wednesday.

Cambridge took the first lead early in the match through Paul Loudon, who latched onto the end of a chip kick to score. Madison Hughes, captain for the MCAAs, replied with a penalty kick inside the 22.

Kingsley McGowan scored the MCAAs’ first try after receiving the ball from Hughes, who broke the gain line to set up the try. Hughes also converted to give the MCAAs a 10-5 lead at the half.

Cambridge could have narrowed the deficit with a penalty kick early in the second half, but the effort went wide. Hughes stole the ball a few minutes later to set up another break, and Chris Turori fed Vili Toluta’u for the try and a 15-5 lead.

After winning a scrum, McGowan found space with the ball and freed Shaun Potgieter for the MCAAs’ third try. Loudon scored his second try for Cambridge late in the match, but the MCAAs held on for the 22-12 win.

"The performance was better than in the first game," Head Coach Matt Sherman told John Doody. "But we knew we needed a better performance, as we knew they were both rested and improved from the first game. The boys dug deep from the well and it was a gutsy win.

"The front row did a good job. We had them in there for 50 minutes and they stepped up. Mike Lawrenson also was phenomenal defensively, in the lineout, [and] he had some good carries. Kaleikaumaka Konrad had a nice kicking game and kept the game flowing."

The MCAAs will finish their three-match tour at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, Mass., against Ontario Blues Saturday, June 28, at 2:30 P.M. ET. Support the MCAAs to be entered to win a match-day experience with the team, including team kit, and follow @aarugby on Twitter for match updates.
