Wheeling Jesuit Rugby strives for excellence both on and off the field. As a newly formed varsity rugby program, WJU Rugby aims to be one of the top Division One Collegiate programs in the country. Our athletes recieve top-level coaching, and players are developed to compete for All-American honors.
WJU Rugby Student Athletes follow a rigorous training and strength & conditioning regimen, balance their team obligations with the demands of college life and in the process learn the meaning of teamwork, discipline, and the sacrifice associated with the pursuit of a common goal.
All athletes at some moment experience defeat and then must move on with their lives; they will also taste success and it is hoped will learn to be gracious. These are important lessons learned from competitive sports that are fully consistent with WJU Rugby's goal of developing the mind, body and spirit.
Rugby returned to WJU in the fall of 2012 after 10 plus years on hiatus from the University. The program was brought back by the President and Vice-President of the University at a varsity level to give student-athletes who play Rugby the opportunity to compete at a high level as well as further their education at one of 27 Jesuit Universities here in the United States. The program not only looks to compete at the highest collegiate level, Div-1A and contended for a National title in the future but also produce individuals who are able to enter the different player pools for the various levels of national teams to hopefully represent the USA on the international stage.
