Work For It Profiles: USA Rugby club player Jason Klotzer

USA Rugby is now WORKFORIT Rugby

USA Rugby club player works off the weight with rugby.

In the span of just three years, former United States Army member Jason Klotzer, 37, dropped more than 170 pounds playing rugby, a sport he found “by accident.”

From 377 pounds in June 2010 to a low of 195 in August 2012, Klotzer has played nearly 50 matches in the three years since discovering rugby, both 15s and sevens. In fact, Klotzer will have to gain weight to play 15s.

Klotzer began his rugby career with DII club Lancaster Roses and is currently with DIII side Harrisburg Rugby, where he is also the club photographer. He played on the team that won the Atlantic Cup Over-35 in 2012 and played in the Can-Am at Saranac Lake. Klotzer is a flanker and lock and is learning the eight position.

“The first time I was lifted in the lineout I almost cried when I got home and told my wife,” Klotzer said. “It was such a huge accomplishment to be the lightest guy in the lineout.”

Klotzer, a former weight loss patient, is teaming up with other weight loss patients and rugby players – “guys like me who are past our prime but we love to grow and play the game” – to compete in the PA-HRFC 7s in Campbelltown, Penn., June 29.

“I think the Work For It campaign is brilliant, and I think it could apply from Rookie Rugby to Old Boys,” Klotzer said. “For me it applies in that, yes, I had help with surgery, but the work has been nonstop to become a better athlete, rugby player and healthier person. I owe my success largely in part to rugby.”

“Jason exemplifies the characteristics of USA Rugby’s Work For It campaign and we are very proud to have such a glowing example of how rugby plus hard work can build character and health on and off the pitch,” USA Rugby Chief Marketing Officer Pam Kosanke said. “Nice work, Jason!”
