WPL Playoffs See Top Teams Advance, Bottom Teams Fight Against Relegation

Virginia Beach, VA. -- After the first day of the weekend-long Emirates Airline USA Rugby 2011 Women's Club Championships the finalists for the WPL National Championship have been set as the Berkeley All Blues and Twin Cities Amazons advance. In the bottom teir of the WPL Playoffs the Minnesota Valkyries took on Keystone while the Washington Furies matched up against New York Rugby Club to avoid relegation to Division I.

The lower teir semifinals had the two bottom teams from the Red and Blue Divisions competing for the chance to stay in the WPL for another season and avoid relegation to Division I. In the first match of the day New York Rugby Club overcame the Washington Furies 20-5. Later in the day the Minnesota Valkyries fought hard against a close and exciting match against Keystone. Keystone came out on top, though, 43-38. The lower teir final will be played on Sunday morning with the consolation game taking place earlier that day.

Twin Cities Amazons confronted Blue Division's runner-up Beantown in the first top teir semi of the day. The match was a high scoring festival with exciting offensive bursts and lacking defense on both sides of the ball. The first half had both teams struggling to find their strides as the half time scoreboard read only 10-5 Amazons. The second half, however, saw both teams come into their respective styles and capitalize on their chances. The Amazons kept pressure up in the set pieces and continued to pin Beantown in their own half. This allowed the Amazons plenty of scoring chances which they did not fail to utilize. The match was extremely close to the end though and both teams displayed their attacking reputations to the fullest. Final score Amazons over Beantown 29-25.

The second semifinal pitted the Berkeley All Blues against California rivals and Red Division power houses San Diego Surfers. The match was the closest one yet for the All Blues and the half time whistle saw the teams in tight competition with Berkeley ahead only by five points. However, the All Blues seemed to get things going in the second half and ended the exciting semi with a victory over the Surfers, 17-7.

The Berkeley All Blues and Twin Cities Amazons both finished the regular season at the top of their respective divisions. And after cutting through the semifinals on Friday the two teams find themselves in a much deserved and long awaited environment. The Berkeley All Blues and Twin Cities Amazons look to the National Championship match they will be in come Sunday afternoon.
