D1 Women's Playoff Weekend

Day 1 of the USA Rugby Division 1 Women’s Club Playoffs

Chicago NS vs Philadelphia
In one of the most thrilling games of the weekend, the defending National Champions took on Philadelphia. Philly was the last seed in the brackets, so most thought that Chicago NS would walk right over them. Philly had other ideas and brought the fight! NS struck first with an unconverted try within the first few minutes. Philly struck back with a long penalty kick to make it 5-3. At the half it was still a tight scoreline with Philly up 15-8. Philly came out hard in the second half and scored early out wide to make it 20-8. Off the restart (kick off) NS returned the kick off for a score and made it 13-20. At this point Philly started to rack up a few penalties and NS began to really penetrate on offense. The kick to tie the game came off another restart (kick off) and so they went into overtime.

Overtime was set with two 10 minute halves, the first overtime period passed with no score from either team and so they started the second overtime. At the last minute Philly marched it down the pitch and scored in the corner to upset the defending National Champions. Philly will face NOVA tomorrow for a chance to play in the Women’s D1 Championships while Chicago NS will face off against NOVA.
Final score: Chicago NS 23 Philadelphia 28

NOVA vs ORSU
From the very start of this match it was clear that former WPL team ORSU came to stand toe to toe with NOVA. From the opening kick off they showed their strong offense and support play and flyhalf Toni Fujiwara scored in the corner. ORSU’s quick start was quickly stifled by knock ons, running out of bounds and ball retention. NOVA capitalized on these mistakes and used their speedy back line to attack again and again. With ten minutes left in the first half, NOVA out paced the ORSU forwards to score in the corner, bringing the score 5-5. Before the half, ORSU put prop Adrienne Acosta into the try zone for the 10-5 lead. Right before the half ORSU inside center broke through and Beckett Royce converted.

The second half started and ORSU struggled to put the game away, they suffered two sin bins and NOVA had one as well. Both teams were heavily penalized at the breakdown and struggled to adjust. ORSU put the nail in the coffin towards the end of the match when they broke through on a line out. ORSU will see Philly tomorrow while NOVA will see Chicago NS.
Final score: NOVA 15 ORSU 17

Detroit vs Seattle Breakers
from Detroit Rugby: Both teams started the game with a lot of intensity, with Seattle scoring the first try of the game with a successful conversion. Detroit was able to come from behind and score several times to take the lead. Seattle scored again but could not come back against Detroit. We are ready to represent the D again tomorrow. Thanks to all of the fans who traveled to Atlanta to support Detroit!
Detroit moves on to the Final Four against Atlanta tomorrow while the Seattle Breakers will match up against Chicago.
Final score: Detroit 37 – Seattle 12

Atlanta vs Chicago
Unfortunately there isn’t much to write about this game except that Atlanta looked good. Real good. They easily defeated Chicago and look towards their match tomorrow against Detroit. Chicago will look to improve against the Seattle Breakers tomorrow.
Final score: Atlanta 58 Chicago 0

Day 2 of the USA Rugby Division 1 Women’s Club Playoffs
Chicago NS vs NOVA
NOVA came out of the gates quick and quickly put pressure on NS and backed them up into their red zone. A shallow kick pass was attempted for the score, but NS was able to stop the attack. From there Chicago NS took over and after a series of pick and gos, Christiane Pheil went over the line for the first unconverted try. NOVA attempted to spread out NS with a few well placed kicks, but NS handled them well. Another quick try before the half and it was NS 10 NOVA 0.

At the start of the second half NS took advantage of a pentaly and slotted a penalty kick. NOVA finally answered back with a beautiful play out wide with an unconverted try. With about twenty minutes left in the half, NS was backed up in their 22m, the pressure continued and a penalty was given up. NOVA slotted the penalty kick and it brought the score to NS 13 NOVA 8. Lots of back and forth play but the score line remained the same at the final whistle.
Final score: Chicago NS 13 NOVA 8

Seattle Breakers vs Chicago
Both of these teams had plenty to prove as their play on Day 1 was not what they would have wanted. Seattle immediately put Chicago under pressure and backed them up inside their 22m. Chicago withstood the pressure for a good 10-12 minutes but then the tension broke when Seattle broke over the line for a try. A few minutes later Seattle went over the line again to bring the score to Seattle 10 Chicago 0.

The second half started with more of the same as Seattle continued to bring the pressure, they scored quickly in the corner to bring the score to Seattle 15 Chicago 0. A few moments later a penalty kick was good for Seattle, putting them up by 18 points. Chicago wasn’t out for the count though and finally got on the board with an unconverted try. With only a few moments left Chicago scored again, but their last minute push wasn’t enough, Seattle takes fifth place 18-12.
Final score: Seattle 18 Chicago 12

Philadelphia vs ORSU
This match was a tale of two Phillys, Day 1 Philly was confident and strong, Day 2 Philly was tired and overwhelmed. ORSU took advantage of this and brought the pain. Philly worked hard but couldn’t quite string it together and ORSU walked away with the victory and a spot in the National Championship defeating Philadelphia 32-0.
Final score: Philadelphia 0 ORSU 32

Detroit vs Atlanta
Atlanta had an easy road to this final and so all the pressure was on them…they didn’t dissapoint. Even when Tia Blosser from Atlanta was sin binned early in the first half, they didn’t panic. Shortly after that, flyhalf, Heather Hale slotted a penalty kick putting them up by three points. A few moments later a Detroit player was also yellow carded so each side felt the pain of playing short. Once the teams were back at full strength the tries came quickly for Atlanta. Hale continued her good work and slotted the conversions bringing the score to Atlanta 22 Detroit 0 at the half.

The second half was a brilliant display of support play by Atlanta, three converted tries (Hale converted) and the final score was Atlanta 39 Detroit 0. Atlanta moves on to face ORSU at the D1 Club National Championships.
Final score: Detroit 0 Atlanta 39
